Singer-songwriter Basson Laas has dropped his uplifting new single and cinematic video, designed to inspire hope and bring a “smile” to every listener’s face.
Titled “Smile”, the track opens with warm, inviting chords that guide listeners into an “unknown valley” where joy feels scarce, but hope is never out of reach.
Drawing on the facial-feedback hypothesis – the idea that even a forced smile can boost your mood – the song celebrates how a simple grin can lighten heavy burdens and spark connections between strangers.
Reflecting on its creation, Basson Laas shares that “Smile” was inspired by Linkin Park’s 2010 closing track “The Messenger”. “From the very first time I played the chords, that song was my anchor,” he explains. “I loved its acoustic clarity and the way it ended an album with hope.
“Smile” started there, but it quickly became its own thing – honest, melodic, and quietly defiant.” It’s this spirit of defiance and hope that carries the song’s message: even in life’s darkest valleys, shared stories and open hearts can help us find our way back to joy.
Musically, “Smile” blends adult contemporary warmth, folk-pop simplicity, and a touch of alternative edge – a sound Basson Laas has refined while touring with established artists and performing at festivals with his band.
The accompanying video mirrors the song’s emotional journey, moving from quiet reflection to uplifting visuals that celebrate resilience and human connection.
