B1DR (the Biodiversity Institute of the Drakensberg and Ranges) has dropped “Marula”, an immersive new track that blends wildlife conservation with inventive sound design.
Created in collaboration with musician Franco Schoeman and Infuse Music, the track turns the deep, infrasonic communication of African elephants into a vivid sonic experience that entertains while highlighting urgent conservation issues.

Born from BIDR’s mission to protect endangered species, “Marula” draws its identity from the iconic African fruit that elephants adore.
Elephants sit at the centre of B1DR’s research, especially their powerful low-frequency rumbles that travel long distances and help guide safer migration across the continent. Those vibrations form the backbone of the track, fusing raw elephant communication with a textured musical landscape that opens a window into their hidden world.
The Heart of “Marula”: A Craving for the Wild
At its core, “Marula” pulls you into the mind of a free, roaming elephant. Their actual rumbles and calls are woven into the track to “sing” lines that express yearning – a craving for something sweet, familiar, and essential. Schoeman’s composition channels these sounds into a rhythmic, energetic piece that feels both playful and deeply connected to Africa’s natural soundscape.
The result is more than a song. It’s an emotional bridge. By pairing authentic elephant audio with Schoeman’s vibrant production, the track becomes a lively, sunrise-ready anthem that hums with the pulse of the savanna. It’s a tribute to the continent’s overlooked symphonies and an invitation for listeners to feel their weight and wonder.
From Pretoria Premiere to an International Stage
“Marula” first roared to life at B1DR’s launch concert in Pretoria this past September, quickly earning its place as a standout moment – equal parts educational and electrifying. The track now forms a key element of BIDR’s upcoming tour, which will travel across South Africa, Italy, Switzerland, and Germany.
Each event aims to engage audiences through sensory-led experiences, shifting people from passive observers into informed conservation supporters.
Whether you encounter the track on stage or through your morning playlist, “Marula” serves as a reminder of the fragile balance in Africa’s ecosystems and the vital role elephants play as the continent’s quiet architects.
