Cape Town-based songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Yellow House (real name Emile van Dango) releases his debut album for ODESZA’s Foreign Family Collective label, featuring singles “Trouble Always Finds Me”, “Milk & Honey”, and “Blowing Away”. The album follows the ODESZA and Yellow House collaborative EP ‘Flaws In Our Design’ from 2023.
More info about Yellow House’s debut album
The conception of Psalms of Yellow House began when Emile was living secluded in a farm cottage hidden in the mountains of South Africa’s Western Cape.
Far removed from society, Emile was left to confront his innermost thoughts in stark isolation. Trapped in a cycle of manic bliss and despair, compounded by a battle with substance addiction, this period inspired songs such as “Trouble Always Finds Me”, “Leave the City” and “Comedown King”.
Emile elaborates, “During this period, I reflected on my life and recognized that parts of myself needed to be cut loose to create room for rebirth”.
Newly in love and spurred on by a desire for change, Emile returned to the city to face his demons and rebuild his life.
Turning to his music, he tackled the lingering childhood pains, strained relationships, and the challenges of embracing newfound sobriety through his songwriting. With his demons now behind him, the new album marks a final goodbye to his former self and welcoming a new era.
Psalms of Yellow House is more than a collection of songs. The project embodies the culmination of a journey that is both artistic and deeply personal. As its namesake suggests, each track is a psalm, a hymn that serves as a reflection of experiences lived and lessons hard-learned.
It offers a vulnerable chronicle of life that demonstrates how beauty, power and meaning can be salvaged from the depths of any experience.
Psalms of Yellow House follows 2020 project Mania / Post Mania, which was lauded by the likes of BIRP.fm, Indie Shuffle, Maison Kitsune and Stereofox.
More recently, the artist collaborated with ODESZA on 2023 EP ‘Flaws In Our Design’, a dreamy, transformative amalgamation of Yellow House’s psychedelic alterna-folk and ODESZA’s epic, symphonic compositions which received acclaim from the likes of EDM.com and Dancing Astronaut, and American Songwriter, who described the EP as “stunning, head-bobbing new dream music”.
The EP also saw Yellow House debut on Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs charts on lead single “Heavier”.
Yellow House’s new album ‘Psalms of Yellow House’ is out now on Foreign Family Collective.
