I snapped the photo of the week during Vulvodynia‘s set at JARR Bar in Pretoria a few weeks ago. This photo is the first to be featured in this new segment on SA Music Zone (which aims to showcase scenes from the SA Music Scene).
Who Are Vulvodynia again?
Spawned in 2014 by Vocalist Duncan Bentley and Guitarist Luke Haarhoff, Vulvodynia is a South African slam juggernaut designed with one purpose: to make the craziest, most absurdly heavy music possible, while attempting to define themselves as more than just “another slam band.” To date the band has released 6 studio albums and they’ve played shows all around the globe.
It’s a long story, but Duncan Bentley is no longer part of the band. Lwandile Prusent is the band’s new lead vocalist. Prusent originally joined Vulvodynia as a guitarist. The band is currently on tour in the USA and Canada.
When did I snap this photo at JARR Bar?
Vulvodynia is constantly touring around the world, so was actually great to watch them perform in South Africa inbetween tours.
I snapped this photo of Lwandile Prusent (and some peeps’ shoes) at JARR Bar on the 11th of August 2023. They were the last band of the evening. Middle Grounds & Sunken State were the other two bands playing that night.
I am over 40 years old, so I tend to avoid mosh pits – but that wasn’t the case for the majority of the folks who visited the event. Peeps were losing their shoes and this photo is evidence of that.
The mosh pits and wall-of-deaths were brutal (but great to watch from the sound-desk). It was also nice to see people looking out for eachother that night. The music might be loud, but the fans are closet softies with hearts of gold (if you ask me).

In case you did not know, JARR Bar has since moved locations. Make sure that you familiarize yourself with the new address before you try to go to a gig there. They are located on Sefako Makgato drive in the Derde Park Shopping Centre now.
Feel free to share this article with your friends. You are also more than welcome to check out the rest of the photos from that night on the SA Music Zone Facebook page.
