Last week saw the release of Seer, the 3rd album from South African sludge metallers The Drift. The album follows their 2013 debut Dreams of Deluge and 2015’s The Mountain Star and forms the final piece of the Deluge trilogy. Seer is available to buy / stream on all major digital platforms.
According to the band: “Seer is the sound of introspection, with tracks ranging from claustrophobic and frenetic to open and expansive, it tackles the spectrum of The Drift’s diverse delivery.”
Comprised of old hands from the South African rock and metal scene, the band’s debut performances were with Lamb of God during their South African tour in January 2014. The same year saw them playing with international bands like Unearth, Protest the Hero, Wolfmother, Affiance and Dreamshade.
In 2015 they played Witchfest alongside Cannibal Corpse, Hatebreed, Epica, Decapitated, Johannesburg.
Things got complicated after the release of the second album The Mountain Star in 2015. Because of work and family commitments the band had to become more fluid to survive. Guitarist Stefan Stabic had to leave; Alec Surridge stepped in. As a result, the band crafted their own corner in the Johannesburg music scene by opting for a more DIY approach.
Metalhammer reviewed Seer and gave it 7/10:
“Combining the ferocity of death metal with hints of sludge-driven undertones, this South African five pieces third studio outing boasts cataclysmic grooves that more than sink their teeth in”
Outlaws of the sun also reviewed The Drift‘s new album:
“A deeply engrossing and brutally heavy affair with a lot of cool things going for it.”
