Durban seems to be the city which keeps on giving when it comes to some of South Africa’s best musical artists. Its latest export: 18 year old matriculant Tessi Nandi who has released a brand new single, entitled “Time is a Thief”; a soulful offering expressing the bittersweet reality of friendships.
Her 7th official single release, Tessi Nandi already started singing at the age of 2 and describes music as her constant companion from a young age. While her main instrument is the acoustic guitar,
Tessi also plays electric guitar, ukulele, piano and bass guitar. She describes music as not just a collection of notes and melodies, but a language which communicates emotions and connects people on a profound level.
Tessi Nandi shares her thoughts about music
“Music has the power to heal. My aim is to make music that people are able to resonate with. We often feel that we are alone in our emotions and cannot explain how we feel, but music allows us to express these emotions in ways words cannot.”
A mixture of RnB, Pop and Jazz – “Time is a Thief” was written by Tessi Nandi towards the end of 2020 when she found herself wrestling with the ever-changing world that she found herself in, yearning for a single moment to pause. The single was recorded at Sound Foundry on a visit to Cape Town, when friend of Tessi, Majozi arranged the opportunity for her to record the offering.
Featuring intimate lyrics and relaxing melodies whilst reflecting the truthful and honest nature of Tessi’s music – “Time is a Thief” is one of the first songs Tessi ever wrote and explores the thoughts and feelings of individuals who are about to embark on a new journey in their life.

“People may always be scared of facing a new chapter of their life. The song is about wishing that time could stop for a moment. It is about being fearful of what the future holds, and about the friendships and relationships we make during our time on Earth.”
“I hope that my music serves as a comfort to those who listen, letting them know that their feelings are valid. A lot of my songs deal with loss, love, and overcoming obstacles. Therefore, I hope my music reminds listeners that although we go through hard times, we should not let it define us. We should use the pain from our experiences and turn it into strength to become better versions of ourselves.”
Fans can look forward to more music and an EP from Tessi Nandi in 2024.
