Much loved Joburg folk musician, Steve Umculo has releases his brand-new single “Fire To My Soul” across all digital platforms today.

Written while Steve was still living in the US in 2017, this song has been a crowd favourite at his live shows for years and has finally been given the studio attention it deserves. Steve remotely recorded this song with a host of talented musicians between Jo’burg, Pretoria, Cape Town and Paris during the lockdown in 2021. He used recently developed technological advances to bring this catchy anthem to life and was able to do so partly due to the ease of connectivity that the pandemic brought to the world.
Steve Umculo explains the inspiration for the song
“‘Fire To My Soul’ is an upbeat ode to the dichotomous feeling that only an unsure lover can provoke. It represents the all-too-familiar emotion of being swept away by someone and then burned by their apprehension to be with you. This experience is often preceded by overwhelming sensations of happiness and euphoria that can be ripped away as quickly as they appear. The line ‘give me peace and give me hope and set a fire to my soul’ is a perfect summary of this affair – the ‘fire’ representing both passion and pain.”
Although written with a slightly gloomy message, ‘Fire To My Soul’ is filled with catchy hooks, foot stomping grooves and light guitar lines reminiscent of South Africa’s maskandi style. This lyric vs music contradiction brings a somewhat fatalistic edge to this song telling us, “affairs of the heart can be tough and sometimes all we can do is pick ourselves back up and dance the pain away”.
“Fire To My Soul” is available on all digital platforms from today and will be accompanied by a national tour. One of the big shows will be the Friday night main stage slot at Splashy Fen, one of SA’s oldest and most prestigious music festivals.
