The music industry has long been male-dominated, making it challenging for female creatives—whether singers, songwriters, or producers—to establish themselves. However, the landscape is gradually shifting.
Artists like Taylor Swift, Adele, Billie Eilish, Alicia Keys, and Beyoncé have fought their way to the top, not only carving out names for themselves but also paving the way for other women to follow.
South Africa boasts a rich musical legacy with generations of iconic women, from Miriam Makeba, Brenda Fassie, and Busi Mhlongo to Lebo Mathosa and Zahara.
As Africa’s leading independent music publisher, Sheer Publishing Africa is dedicated to uplifting the next generation of female creatives. In line with this commitment, they sponsored the ‘Songwriter of The Year’ award at the 2024 Basadi in Music Awards, held on August 10 at the Joburg Theatre in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.
Founded in 2022, the Basadi in Music Awards celebrates and honors women across the South African music industry, including singers, rappers, DJs, composers, producers, and other creatives. Voted for by the public, these awards aim to showcase and empower women by giving them the platform to shine.
Afro-soul artist Brenda Mtambo won the coveted ‘Songwriter of The Year’ award for her song “Bhaluyacima.”
Expressing her gratitude on social media, she shared, “I’ve always said I’m a writer before I’m a singer, and as I write this caption, I’m lost for words. Writing music has healed me in so many ways. I’ve spent years journaling and singing my way through life, and seeing you love and support my songs is my greatest blessing.”
“Thank you for being on this journey with me. I dedicate this award to my grandmother, maBiyela, who I know is celebrating me from above.”
Singer-songwriter and Sheer Publishing client Lwah Ndunkulu also took home awards for ‘Most Streamed Song’ and the prestigious ‘Artist of the Year.’
Thando Makhunga, Managing Director of Sheer Publishing Africa, adds, “At Sheer Publishing, we’re proud to support and celebrate the achievements of women who are shaping the future of African music and leading the way for the next generation of artists.”
Sheer Publishing celebrates all the phenomenal nominees at the Basadi in Music Awards and remains committed to honoring female talent in the music industry year-round
While August is recognized as Women’s Month, Sheer Publishing supports female music professionals throughout the year, as reflected in recent signings like rapper and hitmaker Anele Zondo and singer and Blood and Water actress Khosi Ngema.
Anele Zondo, known as ‘Ney The Bae,’ who recently welcomed a baby girl, has amassed over 900,000 Instagram followers.
Beyond being an influencer, she’s known for hosting *Massive Music* on DStv’s Mzansi Magic and playing Faith on *The River*. Originally from KZN, Anele started exploring presenting at just 16 years old and has risen to the top with determination and grace. She recently announced the release of her debut EP.
Khosi Ngema, also a new addition to the Sheer Publishing family, is a true inspiration to young female creatives. She made her mark as Fikile Bhele in the 2020 Netflix series Blood and Water.
A multi-talented star, Khosi’s skills extend beyond acting—she’s also a model, multi-instrumentalist, and released her debut single “Why” in March this year. The track reflects her creativity and resilience as a dynamic force in the industry.
