Everyone’s favourite acoustic folk punk band Satanic Dagga Orgy have just released their new EP “The Prawn Awakens”. With a name taken straight off a tabloid headline, it’s clear that Satanic Dagga Orgy don’t take themselves too seriously.
The same, however, can’t be said for their approach to music. Drawing influence from pop music and punk rock, S.D.O’s grooving folk jams fill the space between the two extremes and get the crowd bouncing along from the first chord to the last beat of the snare.
Satanic Dagga Orgy made friends with three new dogs over the two days we were in studio
They (well David Grevler) used an autoharp and they didn’t even know there was a thing called an autoharp. Most of the opening vocals for “Kan Jy Best?” were recorded acapella because Peter couldn’t hit the right opening note. Shaun (who plays bass) actually wrote one of the guitar riffs in “Slight Return” in the studio. Over 2 days the band drank 3 cases of beer and two bottles of whiskey, and smoked at least 6 boxes of cigarettes because they’re fucking professional like that Without the intro and bonus track, the EP is less than 15 minutes long. The same time as it takes for Zam to wake up in the morning.
The band released the EP over the weekend at Rumours Rock City in Johannesburg. Have a listen to it below:
If you ask me, “The Prawn Awakens” is proof that SA Music is alive and well. You can download the EP on Bandcamp HERE.
I have to admit that I did not think much about this band when I first heard about them, but I have to say that they’re definitely one of the most entertaining acts to watch live in the country.
Their recent performance at Park Acoustics and both the times they played at Oppikoppi festival definitely stand out in my aging memory banks. They’re also one of the most unique acts in the SA Music scene and I can’t wait to see what they get up to next.
