Earlier today a tweet for the Rolling Stone USA caught my eye which read “The Pixies are back with their first new song since 2004”. At first I thought that this was a hoax or some kind of elaborate prank, but after reading the article the tweet linked to I was extremely glad that it wasn’t one.
Pixies have indeed released a new single entitled “Bagboy” and it’s absolutely eargasmic. Pixies are one the bands that have had a huge influence on my love for alternative rock and my music taste in general. Hearing the new song for the first time earlier tonight brought back some very fond memories from the 1990’s. My mind wandered back to the good old Shaft days in Pretoria (when you could still buy 4 Black Labels for R10), the first time I cranked up “Monkey Gone To Heaven” on my CD player (after a penpal from Caledon in the Western Cape recommended it to me), the good old TUT hostel days when I used to crank up the “Death To The Pixies” album in my dorm room before heading out for a night on the town and it made me realize how much I miss listening to the Pixies on a regular basis. I’m pretty sure that if you check out the video for “Bagboy” below it will have the same effect on you
Hear what I mean? Great news is that you can download this song for free on the Pixies website, so if you also think that this tune is eargasmic, do it now!
In case you did not know, Pixies hail from Boston, Massachusetts and were formed in 1986. The band split up in 1993, but re-united in 2004. The current members of the band are Frank Black, David Lovering and Joey Santiago. Sadly Kim Deal (who was also in The Breeders) left the band two weeks ago. The vocals on “Bagboy” is actually sung by Jeremy Dubs of The Bunnies. The release of the new single has boosted the rumor that Pixies may be releasing a new album in the near future. I guess that time will tell if there’s any truth to that.
