Hard rock duo Perry & Blackwell are making a bold return with the release of their highly anticipated debut single, “Sticks & Stones,” alongside their self-recorded album, Volume 1.
More info about Perry & Blackwell
Jon Perry and Jake Blackwell, longtime friends and seasoned rock musicians, are breaking new ground with this solo project, marking a shift toward a raw, swagger-filled rock ‘n’ roll sound.
Fans of Durban’s local rock scene will remember *Perry & Blackwell* from their previous bands, such as Zip Code, High Trailer, Conform To None, and the heavier Minority For The Masses.
After years of refining their skills and exploring different musical directions, the duo has come full circle, producing an album that’s both nostalgic and refreshingly unpolished. “Sticks & Stones”—the spark for the entire project—captures this fresh direction perfectly.
The journey of “Sticks & Stones” began with a riff Jon had been experimenting with—a riff so powerful it inspired the creation of the whole album.
The track marks a clear departure from the metal-influenced sound of Minority For The Masses, diving into a rock ‘n’ roll vibe with added swing and swagger.
Jake explains, “We wanted this new project to embody the energy and attitude of classic rock ‘n’ roll, with songs that feel alive and unrestrained.”
The message behind the song is simple yet powerful—a call for redemption and release.
“’Sticks & Stones’ is about breaking free from the metaphorical barriers that have held you back. It’s about shedding the things that have tripped you up and clearing a path forward,” says Jon.
When creating the track, the synergy between Jon and Jake was as strong as ever. Jon laid down the core of the song, built around his unforgettable riff, while Jake layered in additional guitar parts, adding a fresh dynamic to the verses.
Together, they developed the vocal melodies and lyrical themes, which flowed naturally as the song came together.
