Today sees the release of a brand new single from Pedro Barbosa – a collaboration with fellow Pretorian singer-songwriter, Catharina, entitled “Write A New Song”.
Like most of Pedro’s work, the song was inspired by one of his previous relationships and is about a person who doesn’t want to be with someone, but who also doesn’t want them to move on. Ever since writing the song a few years ago, Pedro felt a Disney-vibe to it which made him think of Catharina’s voice.
Seeing as he’s been wanting to work with her, he approached her to ask if she wanted to be a part of the project and she agreed. Catharina’s musical experiences and singing style blends into the realm of Baroque Pop.
After obtaining a degree in classical music at NWU, she embarked on a solo career with the release of her debut album, The Untamed Pure in 2015. Her involvement in various theatre and stage productions became a cornerstone of her performance style.
With a shared vision with Pedro Barbosa of invoking raw emotion through music, the duo’s collaboration felt like a natural progression, born from years of musical synergy.
After writing and tracking a demo of the song, they recorded it at Good Morning Sweet Song Songbird Recording Studio with Werner Kahts, who was responsible for the arrangements of the single. The final mixing of the song was done by Mark Beling.
Reflecting on their partnership, Catharina comments
“After singing for years with Pedro, it just felt like a natural evolution to end up in the studio with him. We both want to write music that the listener can experience and feel the emotion.”
“I think it is a beautiful song. I truly believe the song grew into exactly what it wanted to be.”
Pedro agrees that Catharina blended into the emotion of the song effortlessly, and brought a different dynamic to what he usually does. The single embodies the duo’s belief in music’s transformative power, evolving into a beautiful testament to creative expression.
