Emerging pop-folk artist Nosila unveiled his latest single, “Halfway,” on September 13th via Simon John Hatch Music. The evocative track premiered on Australian tastemaker scenestr.
Nosila is the solo project of South Australian multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Simon Hatch, a project that has been developing over the past four years as Simon’s personal and creative journeys aligned.
With over 100,000 streams and counting across platforms, Nosila’s rise shows no signs of slowing down. “Halfway” was mixed by Stefan Du Randt (Mac Miller, Thelma Plum) and mastered by Andrew Edgson (5 Seconds of Summer, Matt Corby).
For Simon, Nosila is a deeply personal endeavor, created in memory of his sister Alison. Through heartfelt lyrics and powerful arrangements, Nosila explores emotional complexities, offering support to those grappling with mental health challenges.
The connection to his sister is central to the project. “I think for the most part, I write about what I imagine she felt and thought, and how those emotions have passed on to me,” Simon explains.
Nosila’s music touches on themes of anxiety, existence, and personal growth, with his debut EP Salud Amor Dinero featuring a blend of nylon-stringed classical guitar pop with electronic elements, as well as rugged, electrified rock with psychedelic influences.
Drawing inspiration from artists like Guns N’ Roses, U2, and Jeff Buckley, Nosila’s sound appeals to fans of passionate songwriters and soft rockers such as José González and John Mayer.
“Halfway” opens with a brief ambient introduction that gives way to soulful acoustic guitar strums and Simon’s heartfelt vocals. A stirring pre-chorus builds to an anthemic chorus, featuring lush instrumentation, a suspenseful bridge, and a passionate electric guitar riff that leads to a powerful conclusion.
Nosila comments on “Halfway”
“I’ve always written fairly melancholic music, but with this track, I made a deliberate effort to create something more uplifting.” He adds, “The title ‘Halfway’ speaks for itself. The song has a dual meaning: it’s about forming new relationships in unknown places (the halfway) and also about making compromises in existing relationships.”
