Alt-rock outfit Lunar & The Deception released their debut album The Somnambulist on March 6, 2026, alongside the lead single “Ezeru Kazpam”.

The album arrived via X-Ray Sound following strong early momentum generated by their previous single “Your Monsters”.

    Lunar & The Deception

That track premiered through LOCK Magazine and quickly drew attention from international media, including the Dutch music publication Nieuweplaat.

Co-produced by the band together with Michael Rendall, known for his work with The Orb, Peter Murphy, and Killing Joke, the album arrives after several high-profile live appearances.

These include supporting Pussy Riot at the Glastonbury Festival, performing across London venues, and participating in the Sync Summit Music Conference in 2022.

The band has also been recognised by Richer Sounds as Artist of the Week, while Powerplay Magazine awarded The Somnambulist an impressive 9 out of 10 rating. These accolades continue to strengthen the group’s presence across indie rock, dream pop, and neo-psychedelia circles.

Lunar & The Deception: From South African Roots to Global Stages

With roots in Durban and Nelspruit, Lunar & The Deception is fronted by vocalist Britt Xyra Dusk, a singer-songwriter whose creative background extends into professional costume design.

Britt’s striking stage presence is matched by a strong visual identity. She personally designs the band’s imagery and aesthetics, often drawing inspiration from ancient deities, prophetic sorcerers, and tribal warriors. These elements add a theatrical layer to the band’s performances.

Percussionist Hedge Seel, originally raised in Oxfordshire, developed his rhythmic style while travelling through Southeast Asia and India. The group also features dub producer Thomas Hammond and sound engineer Greg Chapter.

Together they craft a sound that blends alt-rock, indie rock, darkwave, dream pop, gothic influences, and neo-psychedelia. Their sonic palette draws inspiration from artists such as Led Zeppelin, Radiohead, Tool, and Evanescence, while evoking the atmospheric qualities associated with Portishead and Esben and the Witch.

    The Sound of The Somnambulist

On The Somnambulist, Lunar & The Deception present an album that refuses to remain confined within a single genre. Instead, the project unfolds as an emotional sonic journey that moves through shifting textures and atmospheres.

The album is led by the powerful single “Ezeru Kazpam”, a track that functions as both a war cry and an anthem. It opens with a spoken dialogue reflecting on how money has become central to modern society, underscored by gentle piano notes before Britt’s haunting vocals enter the arrangement.

Gradually, percussion and a driving guitar riff build momentum, expanding the sonic landscape and accelerating the tempo. The track eventually erupts into a wall of shoegaze-inspired guitars.

As the song reaches its final moments, the band slowly strips away layers of instrumentation until only the original piano motif and ghostly vocals remain. The structure mirrors the wider dynamic arc of the album itself.

    Recording in a Historic Studio

The band recorded The Somnambulist in the secluded environment of Woodworm Studios in Oxfordshire.

Originally established by David Pegg of Fairport Convention, the studio is now run by engineer Stuart Jones, who oversaw the recording process.

The building itself carries a distinctive character. Once an old church, it was later converted into a recording studio, giving the space unusually high ceilings and unique acoustics. These elements helped shape the atmospheric sound that defines The Somnambulist.

With its layered instrumentation, striking visuals, and genre-blending ambition, the album positions Lunar & The Deception as a band unafraid to explore the edges of modern alternative music.
