Lost//Youth have made their debut with a stand-alone single ‘Mayhem’, recorded by singer Alanna Joy and produced by Alanna and David Gresham record’s Sloani. After grafting in the music industry for several years, the group comes together to deliver a unique yet nostalgic experience, with influences from the Foo Fighters, Fleetwood Mac and Kaleo.
“Mayhem” is a fierce alt/rock song with pop sensibilities
The song tells the story of someone who can’t seem to get love right. It explores the saviour complex and the inability to save someone else if you yourself need saving. The track serves as an introduction for the group and paves the way for their two EP collection (the first of which will be out mid-august) that will explore the concepts of light and dark and help define their versatile yet distinctive sound.
Alanna Joy comments on Lost/Youth‘s “Mayhem”
“We recorded the drums and bass at the late Kill City Blues studio and everything else was done in our home studio. We set up a gazebo in our room and hung blankets from the sides to acoustically treat the room.”
“Mayhem is actually one of the first songs we ever played together. I wrote it years ago and never really knew how I wanted the arrangement, but when the band played it for the first time, it was like they knew exactly what to do. It was everything I never knew I wanted for the song. It’s really something special when you play with people that just get you like that.”
The song has already been featured on the Apple music ‘New In Alternative’ Playlist and the Spotify ‘SA Rock Essentials’ & ‘New Music Fridays South Africa’ playlists.
More info about Lost//Youth
Lost//Youth is here to save you from the modern noise. The alt/rock band, formed in 2021, brings something new to the table while being reminiscent of bands from before their time. With acoustic elements, epic guitar solos and sincere lyricism, the group delivers a unique and yet nostalgic experience.
With diverse, anti-modern influences such as Foo Fighters, Fleetwood Mac, Tracy Chapman, KALEO and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, their music is hard to define – and that’s exactly how they like it.
Their upcoming two-part project, playing off the concepts of the light and dark, will help define their sound as malleable and yet inherently distinctive.
Lead singer Alanna Joy brings an amalgamation of fierce and tender elements through her vocal style and tells stories of love, heartbreak and searching for something more. The group’s sound is driven by heavy, melodic bass played by Charlie Charles and driving, passionate electric guitar by Faghri Hendricks. Their drummer, Dan Paulse, who performed with the Medicine Dolls and Frances Clare, concretes their rock grooves and brings a unique style to their softer songs.

I am pretty damn impressed with this track and I’m definitely curious to find out what Lost//Youth are going to throw our way in the near future. In my books, South African Rock is definitely not dead (thanks to tracks and bands like these).
