Julia Robert has released a new single, “Starkes Mädchen”. The song is sung in German and is an amalgamation of 80’s synth and new wave indie pop.

The song’s lyrics were written last year following the rape and murder of Uyinene Mrwetyana. Lyricist and singer Ines Soutschka explains: “While women marched in the streets of South Africa I was in Europe. I felt helpless that I could not be part of this movement and writing these lyrics were my way of expressing my solidarity with, and love for, women in my home country.”
The song is taken from their EP, Late Stage Dream. The EP will be released on the 10th of July 2020. With this release these girls and boys have put together three incredibly dense and heavy songs accompanied by probably one of their lightest and airiest tracks yet. It’s a varied release with stylistic and linguistic surprises throughout, and they are incredibly excited to share it with the world.
More info about Julia Robert
Julia Robert is a female-fronted, female-drummed, boy-guitared, boy-bassed four piece DIY punky / psychy / grungey / glittery / disco-y band from Cape Town. Their sound incorporates riot grrrl snark, krautrocky passages, bubblegum pop sensibilities and all the feels.
The bass is heavy, the guitars are jagged, the drums are pounding and the vocals are urgent. They love non-linear song structures, linear song structures, anxiety, earnestness and unashamedly emotional outpourings.
I vaguely remember watching Julia Robert live at a Mieliepop festival a few years ago and I know that I really enjoyed their set. It would be nice to watch them play a live set in Pretoria or Johannesburg (when this ludricrous lockdown is over).
