Jackson Colt introduces his powerful new instrumental guitar piece, “Monsoon,” produced by renowned rock musician Mark Haze. Accompanied by a captivating music video, the track showcases Colt’s diverse guitar abilities, blending tranquil and intense moments to evoke the essence of a monsoon, immersing listeners in a sonic journey through the duality of nature and life.
At the heart of “Monsoon” is Jackson Colt’s storytelling through his guitar. “This instrumental composition centers on the lead guitar, using various techniques to convey the story. After years of dedication, I’ve come to truly understand the instrument. With “Monsoon,” I wanted the guitar to speak for itself,” Colt shares.
“Monsoon” draws inspiration from the Yin and Yang philosophy, reflecting peace and disorder. Clean guitar sections symbolize calm, while distorted passages capture the monsoon’s intensity, mirroring life’s challenges.
“The piece moves from peaceful clean guitar to intense distortion and back again, symbolizing that after every storm, a brighter day follows. It’s like life: we face challenges, but beyond the darkest clouds, light awaits,” says Colt.
Employing techniques like multi-finger tapping, cross-handed playing, and sweep-picking arpeggios, Colt crafts an immersive experience where clean and distorted sections build dramatic tension, evoking chaotic winds and torrential rain.
The song was inspired by Jackson Colt’s personal experience during a fever-induced delirium in 2021, which felt like being caught in a storm. This disorienting feeling shaped the track’s theme, while Asian musical influences add an exotic depth to the composition.
“I wrote the opening riff while feverish, feeling trapped in a monsoon, and that sense of being overwhelmed inspired the song,” explains Jackson Colt.
Produced by Mark Haze, “Monsoon” boasts a polished production that enhances the track’s depth.
“Mark Haze is one of South Africa’s greatest musicians. Working with him was a dream, and his guidance pushed me to new levels during recording,” Jackson Colt says.
The music video, filmed at Rietvlei Zoo Farm and directed by Keaton Ditchfield, captures the song’s themes of balance and contrast. With tranquil, Yin-inspired scenes by a river and intense, Yang-themed shots on a steel bridge, the video mirrors the duality of calm and chaos.
“Filming in nature was an adventure, and the whole team, including Freddie Fourie and Malice, brought the vision to life. We used contrasting settings, outfits, and camera styles to reflect the contrast between calm and storm,” Colt reflects.
