Female artists who continue to shine long after Women’s Month has ended. From Shekhinah’s expertly curated event line-up, to Normani’s instantly iconic MTV Video Music Award performance, there’s no shortage of achievements.
Sony Music Entertainment Africa’s top performing female artists took centre stage, both on and off the charts. All of this happened while South Africa celebrated the achievements and strength of its women over the course of Women’s Month.

Shekhinah launched Rosefest at Nasrec on National Women’s Day
This was the multiple SAMA-winning pop artist’s celebration of her lauded debut album. Shekhinah performed alongside a full, live band. This micro-festival of fantasy saw every artist on the line-up handpicked by Shekniah hereself. Its success has become the shining jewel in the pop princess’ crown.
Simmy’s newest single “Ngiyesaba” has soared on the YouTube Trending Chart
This has happened after the neo-soul songstress’ debut single “Umahlalela” gave rise to her being one of the few females nominated in 3 categories at this year’s SAMAs. “Ngiyesaba” looks set to dominate the charts for months to come.
Normani silenced all her naysayers
instantly iconic performance of her single “Motivation” at last month’s MTV Video Music Awards, simultanesouly cementing herself as a solo force to be reckoned with.
Beyonce released a new album
The 23-time Grammy Award-winning superstar and superwoman released The Lion King: The Gift album. As her genre-spanning collection of expertly-produced songs in turn focuses the eyes of the world upon Africa, the online explosion of the hashtag for her latest single #BrownSkinGirl saw it become one of the biggest trending this year.
Christia Visser positioned herself as a major player
This Afrikaans Pop star released her debut single “17 Shots”. Thanks to a gorgeous music video for this song, she’s risen up the performance ranks. She’s sharing stages with heavyweights like Snotkop and Elandré now.
SAMA and SAHHA-winning rapper, Rouge, is another artist who slayed the stage at Sway Cold Cyphers alongside the legend himself, whilst double-platinum singer-songwriter and producer, Zonke, took home Best R&B/Soul Album at this year’s SAMAs.
But it’s not all chart-topping glitz and glamour, SMEA’s female artists are businesswomen too, with Thabsie launching her own fitness & lifestyle company called Gain With Gains, aimed at inspiring girls and guys on the go.
SAMA-winning Afro-pop powerhouse Amanda Black, just launched her own label, Afro Rockstar. This co-incided with the release of her poignant new single “Thandwa Ndim”. She was inspired to write this after she saw a report of another SA woman being tragically killed by her partner.
With talent on this level, that’s being expertly nurtured and supported by Sony Music Entertainment Africa, female artists in this country will no longer stand to be complacent or ignored. Hear them roar.
