“Pille Vir Kersfees” is definitely one of best songs to come out in 2009 in South Africa. The song contains well-written and thought out Afrikaans lyrics that almost has a tendency to get the listener to sing along to every word. I consider this song one of best songs ever to be written in Afrikaans.
“Pille Vir Kersfees” (translated as “Pills for Christmas”) was released by Die Heuwels Fantasties on their self-titled debut album last year. It’s definately one of the songs that has received a lot of airplay on South African college radio stations (especially on local Pretoria station Tuks FM). Die Heuwels Fantasties are listed as 2010 MK Award Nominees in 3 categories.
“Pille vir Kersfees” has been nominated in the Best Campus Hit category.
Laudo Liebenberg (of aKING fame) and Johnny de Ridder (of Fokofpolisiekar fame) appear in the video for the song. I especially loved seeing Die Heuwels Fantasties perform this song at the Oppikoppi 2009 Smoorverlief. I have not seen them the group live since then but I’m sure that I will have ample opportunity later this year. They’re listed on the line-up for RAMfest 2010 (for both the Cape Town and Johannesburg legs of the festival).
Hunter Kennedy and Pierre Greeff appeared in the Jack Parow – “Cooler as Ekke” video late in 2009. An acoustic version of Pille Vir Kersfees was released on their Facebook fan page late in 2009. I’m sure that 2010 will be an excellent year for Die Heuwels Fantasties. Only time will tell if they will be releasing another album this year. If they do I’ll definately be one of the first people to buy it.
