Singer-songwriter Charlie Harris, known for his deeply personal storytelling and cinematic folk sound, has returned with a powerful new single titled “Laika”.
The track pays tribute to the first dog sent into space, a story that has long resonated with Harris both as an artist and as a lifelong dog lover.
The Story Behind Charlie Harris’ “Laika”
Laika was a Soviet space dog who became the first living creature to orbit the Earth aboard Sputnik 2 on 3 November 1957.
Originally a stray found on the streets of Moscow, she was selected for the mission because of her calm temperament and small size.
The mission was never intended to bring her back to Earth. Although it was initially believed she survived for several days, it was later revealed that Laika died within hours of launch due to overheating and stress.
For Harris, the story carries a powerful emotional weight.
“I’ve always been a dog lover, so the story of Laika completely captured my imagination,” he explains.
A Visual Story Told Through Illustration
To accompany the release, Harris commissioned a series of unique illustrations that bring Laika’s story to life in a touching music video. The visuals focus on handcrafted artwork rather than artificial imagery, giving the project a distinctly human and emotional quality.

For this release, Charlie Harris collaborated with prolific producer Kevin Leicher. Together they created a richer and more dynamic sound, adding a new level of energy while still preserving the emotional depth that fans associate with Harris’s music.
