Cece Vee is a South African singer and multi-instrumentalist producing powerfully emotive music that features a unique blend of confessional lyrics underpinned by a refreshing modern pop style.
Her new single, “Dysfunctional”, is a melancholic yet hopeful track that has been crafted as the perfect vehicle to showcase Cece’s sweet, striking vocals. Her novel sound contrasts heart-wrenching verses with immense drops leading into provocative choruses filled with powerful beats, dark ominous bass, reverberated guitar licks, and expertly processed distorted vocal harmonies.
Cece Vee reveals that “Dysfunctional” is a track that delves into the universal theme of life beyond a breakup, and the intricate disentanglement process that occurs once a couple decides to call it quits, and remove themselves from each other’s everyday narratives to become memories, and eventually fade away altogether.
Cece Vee explains
“The song deals with how we can lose ourselves in the highs of the relationship, which often blinds us to the faults and red flags. After crashing down from this high of a seemingly perfect, but ultimately doomed relationship, what’s left is often irrevocably broken.”
“It reaches a point of no return, where the relationship is too far gone for it to be fixed or ever feel the same. It’s then that the exes become like ghosts to one another and they can no longer relate like they used to.”
Although this theme is loaded and intense, the accompanying music video directed by Teega Michl elevates the track to a moody love letter to all the ones who went before – the lost loves that form a part of the painfully beautiful, comfortably crooked tapestry of each of our lives.
As Cece sings her heart out, we watch her former flame (played by Anna Louise Boshoff) making her way through the city at night, both of them etched against a darkness that threatens to overwhelm them, but remaining intact, nonetheless. The surprise twist at the end leaves you wondering what might have been, much like real-life breakups often do.
“Dysfunctional” is honest and raw to the core – a glimpse of humanity unfolding one painful petal at time to bloom bravely despite the adversity it has to endure.
