19-year-old Cape Town-based singer-songwriter, Cailyn Shelby recently released her upbeat debut Pop single “My Four Friends” across all digital platforms. The music video was released today.
The love for music has been flowing through Cailyn’s veins from an early age and by the time she was 17, she was enrolled into a song writing course to further develop her already natural talent. Fast forward 2 years and Cailyn hasn’t been able to stop writing since then.
Cailyn Shelby comments on making music and “My Four Friends”
“It’s honestly one of my favourite things to do, I feel so lucky that I am able to express my emotions and ideas in such a way, that people would want to listen and hopefully relate to.”
“’My four friends’ was inspired by my bedroom walls. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I spent a lot of my time writing songs, therefore spent a lot of my time in my room. I think the message behind the song is just finding security in your own space and in your own company.”
“My Four Friends” was recorded with producer Marc Ronin, as well as Sergio Trout from CapeTown Sound, who managed to capture what Cailyn heard in her head while writing the song and created a single that she’s incredibly proud of.
Cailyn comments on recording the song
“Recording the song was an amazing experience. I wrote the song on my piano, but heard it upbeat as it is in the final version. It sounds a lot sadder on the piano, so seeing it come to life as I heard it in my head was quite exciting.”
“Creating and releasing music has always been my dream, so having this dream come true is something that I can’t express in words. I hope people will be looking forward to what I’ll release in future and know that being alone can lead to creative, good things.”
With her debut single finally being released, Cailyn Shelby cannot wait for everyone to hear her music. If her debut is anything to go by, Cailyn is certain to have a bright future bursting with a vast collection of great music.
Filmed by Danie Nel and co-directed by Danie and Cailyn Shelby, the music video was filmed in Cailyn’s own bedroom.
Cailyn Shelby comments on making the music video
“We decided to shoot the video in my room, for a more personal feel to the video, and so that everyone who watches gets to be introduced to ‘My four friends’. The Storybook of the video, is simply a translation of what they see of my feelings, dreams and wishes.”
“It was really weird!! I had these people that I had only just met really, in my room and touching all my stuff, sitting on my bed, just in my space. But it was really nice, because I feel so comfortable in my room, it was easy to just relax and be myself.”
Joining Cailyn in the video is co-star Matthew Koch, who plays the love interest she is “talking” to her walls about. For Cailyn working with him was so easy going and a pleasure.
Cailyn Shelby has a little more to say about “My Four Friends”
“’My four friends’ was inspired by my bedroom walls. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I spent a lot of my time writing songs, therefore spent a lot of my time in my room. I think the message behind the song is just finding security in your own space and in your own company.”
