Our Photo of the Week is a photo of Albert Frost (that I snapped Oppikoppi Unknown Brother in 2011). He played a set with Rob Nagel (from Die Blues Broers) on the Skellum stage that year.
I don’t remember their set in full detail, but I throroughly remember enjoying it immensely. It was day two of the festival in question and it was friggin’ hot in the bushveld sun. Albert Frost and Rob Nagel played a lekker set (much to the delight of the people enjoying the music in front of the stage).
I can’t believe that I snapped the photo below 12 years ago. Time flies when you’re enjoying yourself it seems.
More info about Albert Frost
For the past twenty years, the dynamic performances of Albert Frost, a recipient of the SAMA award, have enraptured audiences across the globe. Rolling Stone has bestowed upon him the title of “the dark prince of South African blues,” and rightfully so.
With a remarkable ability to seamlessly switch between rhythm and lead, he demonstrates his extraordinary prowess on both acoustic and electric guitars. His deepest passion lies in the Blues, which he developed through a longstanding association with the Blues Broers, a renowned group from Cape Town. Since the age of 17 in 1994, he has been performing alongside them.
In the year 2000, Albert Frost earned the distinction of becoming one of the first Fender endorsees in South Africa, and this partnership has endured through the years. In April 2016, he unveiled his highly anticipated third solo album, “The Wake Up,” which clinched the title of Best Rock Album at the 2017 South African Music Awards.
Following a highly successful stint at the 2017 Klein Karoo National Arts Festival, Frost received nominations for a Kanna award and a kykNET Fiëstas 2018 for Best Music Production in two separate shows: one with Loki Rothman (The Acoustic Guitar) and the other with Zolani Mahola (Rok en Rol).
Throughout his career, Albert Frost has had the privilege of supporting and touring with iconic acts such as Simple Minds, REM, Ali Farka Touré, and The Rolling Stones. He has also graced respected festivals including Oppikoppi, The Isle Of Wight, and Hard Rock Calling.
